Why my desktop wallpaper looks like nothing

This is my desktop wallpaper:

pale-blue-dot-sm-no-circle

At first glance it looks like a bunch of noise—grainy and empty. The super geeks that read my blog (are you out there?) will recognize this photo as The Pale Blue Dot, which was selected by Space.com as one of the top ten space science photos of all time.

It’s a picture of Earth. Let me circle Earth using my very advanced Photoshop skills:

pale-blue-dot-(with-circle)

That very small bluish dot is Earth. From Wikipedia:

The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of planet Earth taken in 1990 by Voyager 1 from a record distance, showing it against the vastness of space.

I just think this is awesome. I’m awkwardly interested in space, though, so you might think this is ridiculous. If you’re a geek like me, I’ve uploaded the wallpaper and you can download it here (widescreen) or here (fullscreen).
